Take a Field Trip to La Cueva

As early as 400 BCE, the Jornada Mogollon people were producting El Paso “brownware”. The El Paso Phase of this culture (1200 to 1450 BCE) was in contact with Casas Grandes in Mexico and the Anazazis in Arizona. El Paso Polychrome was produced locally in the Hueco Bolson, at Firecracker Pueblo and many other sites. Join Bureau of Land. Join Bureau of Land Management Archaeologist, Garrett Leitermann and learn more about the Jornada Mogollon, Manso, Mescalero, and Apache peoples of the El Paso area.

Leitermann, adds: “[This] hike that will have you stepping into the past at the Dripping Springs Natural Area. For over 5,000 years La Cueva (“The Cave”) has been home to many people including prehistoric Archaic and Jornada Mogollon people, Manso, Mescalero Apache, and cattle rustlers to name a few. More infamously, the cave is home to one of the oldest cold cases in Las Cruces involving the death of El Hermitano (the hermit). Attendees will learn about the history and archaeology of the area.”

Meet at Dripping Springs Natural Area’s La Cueva trailhead. (More info at riograndetrails andtales.com)Dress appropriately for the weather. Bring water, snacks, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and good hiking shoes. The hike will be approximately 2 hours and is relatively easy. There is a $5 day use fee per vehicle for visiting Dripping Springs Natural Area.

Saturday at 1 PM La Cueva at Dripping Springs near Las Cruces. MAP Take University exit off of 1-25, go east and stay on Dripping Springs Rd. to end. No reservations necessary.
