Saturday, February 21st from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Come join Garrett Leitermann, BLM archaeologist, for an interpretative hike to Peña Blanca in the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument! Come learn about the prehistory of the Peña Blanca and the lives of past peoples while exploring prehistoric rock shelters and practicing the importance of Leave No Trace.

This is a moderately difficult 3-to-4-mile hike to several prehistoric rock shelters in the area. The hike will involve ascending and descending around 300 feet to visit the shelters. Road access to the designated parking area starts out paved, then becomes a well-maintained dirt road, with the last mile becoming a rocky hard packed two track road. Bring adequate water, wear comfortable hiking shoes and dress appropriately for a rugged hike and for the weather.

Due to Wilderness Area limitations on group size and the fragile nature of the Peña Blanca landscape, attendance is capped at 14 persons.

***Prospective attendees are required to RSVP for this hike in order to attend. To RSVP, please email Garrett Leitermann at gleitermann@blm.gov o. There are no fees or costs for attending this hike. Directions to the parking area will be given upon RSVP acceptance.”
