Sunset Heights: History and Architecture

Walk through the historic district of Sunset Heights with UTEP Associate Professor of Art History, Max Grossman and learn more about the history and architecture of a neighborhood established in the the 1880’s. In 1885 John Fisher Satherwaite first started purchasing land in the area in the 1880s and by 1885 had built 90 houses. The neighborhood was dubbed as the “Satherwaite Addition”.

“Sunset Heights became popular among wealthy refugees fleeing the 10-year long Mexican Revolution—notable revolutionary general Francisco “Pancho” Villa even resided in the neighborhood for several years.” (Texas Time Travel)

You will go inside of three houses designed by the renowned architect, Henry Trost, who designed the famed Bassett Tower and Mills Building in downtown El Paso, as well as residences and apartments, and many more commercial and office structures.

Meet at 525 Corto Way on the sidewalk. MAP. The 1.5 – 2 hours walking tour will start sharply at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, April 19th.
